Alice Jane Hebdon

September 2, 1914 — September 8, 2009

Alice Jane Jolley Hebdon, 95, of Goshen/Basalt passed away September 8, 2009 in Idaho Falls, Idaho. She was born September 2, 1914 to George Rutledge Jolley and Jane Therdora Biggs Jolley, joining four brothers and two sisters as the youngest of seven. She grew up in Blackfoot, Idaho, attending Irving Elementary, Blackfoot Junior High and Blackfoot High School, graduating on May 19, 1932.

She met Edwin H. Hebdon through church activities shortly after his family moved into the area in 1930. They began dating steadily in 1932 and were sealed for time and all eternity on March 28, 1934 at the LDS Temple in Logan, Utah.

Their life together began in a one-room apartment behind his family’s house, moving to Blackfoot in the fall when Edwin got a job as a mechanic. In the spring of 1935, they purchased 40 acres near Edwin’s parents and built a two-room log home.

Over the years, they welcomed four children into their lives: Beverly Jane in 1938, Nola Mae in 1943, Edwin Boyd in 1946 and Wesley Leon in 1953. Shortly before Leon was born, they built a new home just to the east of the old log home. In December of 1955, they moved to the Goshen/Basalt area east of Firth, Idaho where they would remain until Edwin passed in 1983.

Alice was always active in the LDS church. Throughout her lifetime, she held many callings, beginning at the age of thirteen as the Primary play leader in the Blackfoot 1st Ward. Her love of music grew with every calling she accepted as a chorister. Early in her marriage, she had the opportunity to sing at the Tabernacle in Salt Lake as part of the Singing Mothers Relief Society Chorus.

As a young couple, she and Edwin were called to serve as Stake Missionaries. Later, in October 1975, they were called to serve full time in the Arizona Holbrook Agricultural Mission. There they taught farming and church doctrine to the Native Americans of the area.

Alice was a kind, loving woman who always had time for family. In later years, she came to be known as Great Alice to many of her family members, an affectionate term bestowed on her by one of her great-grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her parents, four brothers, two sisters, one grandson, one great-grandson and her beloved husband. She is survived by her four children and their spouses: Beverly and Gary Dye of Firth, Idaho, Nola and Gordon Harker of Firth, Idaho, Boyd and Darla Hebdon of Leander, Texas, and Leon and Rita Hebdon of Idaho Falls, Idaho; eleven grandchildren, twenty-three great-grandchildren, and seven great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 A.M. Saturday, September 12, 2009 at the Goshen Ward Chapel (792 North 1090 East). The family will receive friends Friday evening from 7:00 till 8:30 P.M. at Nalder Funeral Home (110 West Oak) in Shelley and Saturday morning 9:30 till 10:45 A.M. at the Church. Burial will be in the Fielding Memorial Cemetery.
