Coleen Midgley Winward

Coleen Cox Winward, 89, of Idaho Falls, passed away September 1, 2016 in Idaho Falls.

Coleen was born on February 12, 1927 to Fredrick Ashley Cox and Mae Rees Midgley Cox in Salt Lake City, Utah. She attended the LDS Business College and University of Utah. As a young adult, she taught skiing at Alta and Brighton ski resorts in Utah and was an avid skier. She was also passionate about hiking and belonged to the Sierra Club. After working at the ski resorts, she took a job with the U.S. Department of State and worked at the embassies in Guatemala and Cuba for four years.

Upon returning home, she served an LDS mission in Mexico. Shortly after her mission, she met Leland Samuel Winward, Jr. and they were sealed by Ezra Taft Benson in the Salt Lake City LDS Temple on November 22, 1963. Coleen and Leland were the parents of two girls: Leeanne (Darrell) Dieringer (Bremerton, WA) and Gayle (Chris) Lewis (Ammon, ID). They made their homes in Salt Lake City,

Utah, Nonnenroth, Germany, Corona, California and Shelley, Idaho.

She was an active member of the LDS church. She and Leland served two full-time missions to McAllen, Texas and Des Moines, Iowa as well as missions to the Family History Center and Stake Missions. She taught in Relief Society and Young Women’s but her favorite calling was that of Primary teacher.

In addition to skiing, hiking, the outdoors, sewing, music, gardening, and family history, she was also a very talented artist. She painted with oils and watercolors; her favorite medium was colored pencil.

She is survived by her two daughters and their husbands, seven grandchildren and seven great-grandsons, a sister, Millie Ann (Cox) Duffin (Salt Lake City, UT) and a brother, W. Lynn Cox (Salt Lake City, UT); all who love her dearly.

Graveside services will be 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, September 6, 2016 at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park, 3401 S Highland Dr., in Salt Lake City, Utah. The family will receive friends Monday evening September 5, from 6:00 till 7:30 p.m. at Nalder Funeral Home (110 West Oak) in Shelley.
