Garen Arnold Hale

June 7, 1938 — January 5, 2017

Garen Arnold Hale, 78, of Shelley, passed away and was reunited with his loving wife, Ranae, on January 5, 2017. He passed away from a battle with cancer.

Garen was born in Pocatello, Idaho on June 7, 1938 to Lyman and Luella Hale. He was the fifth of six sons and grew up in Chubbuck, Idaho, where he learned the meaning of hard work. He graduated from Pocatello High School in 1956 and while in school enjoyed singing in the choir and playing the sousaphone during his senior year. Later he played in the 45th Army Band in the National Guard.

In 1958 he was called to serve an LDS mission in Mexico where learned to speak Spanish, which served him well throughout the years.

On February 1, 1962 he married the love of his life, Ranae Fowler. Together they had eight children: three boys and five girls. They lived several places throughout their marriage: Brigham City, Utah; Logan, Utah; Miami, Florida; Pocatello, Idaho; Idaho Falls, Idaho; Rigby, Idaho. They then moved to Shelley, Idaho where they lived for 40 years.

Garen graduated with an M.A. in Spanish Literature in 1969. Soon thereafter he began his career in teaching. He taught English, drivers education, was a tennis instructor, and also taught Spanish at Idaho Falls High School for 17 years. He retired in 1999.

In 2002, Garen and Ranae, were called to serve an LDS mission in Quito, Ecuador. They returned in 2004 after serving a successful mission.
His wife, Ranae, passed away in 2006. He missed her so much and was never the same.

Garen enjoyed Family History work, gardening, playing tennis, singing, telling stupid “dad” jokes and being with his family and friends. He served in many positions in the LDS church but he most enjoyed serving in the Mountain View Branch (Spanish speaking) in Firth, Idaho for the past several years.

He was proceeded in death by his dad, mom and four brothers: Gerald (Barbara), Verle, Norman, and Leon, and his beloved wife, Ranae.

He is survived by his brother Alan (Carolyn), and three sisters-in-law: Verna, Marba and Starla; his eight children: Kari (Steve) Ciambrone, Dennis (Cheryl) Hale, Tanya Hale, Justin (Lanae) Hale, Lisa (Todd) Mauer, Laurie (Wes) Jensen, Jared (Shirley) Hale and Tara (Jed) Gailey; 29 grandchildren, one great-grandchild with two on the way.
