Guy Waid Young

February 7, 1922 — November 19, 2007

Our beloved father and grandfather, G. Waid Young, 85, of Shelley, Idaho, died on November 19, 2007, in Idaho Falls of causes incident to age.

Waid was born on February 7, 1922, in Malad, Idaho, to Verle and Edith Tippetts Young.  He attended schools in Malad, Idaho, and Salt Lake City, Utah.  Waid graduated from South High School in Salt Lake in 1939.   After graduation, the family moved from Salt Lake City to Shelley, Idaho.  He worked one year in Shelley prior to attending the University of Utah.  Waid then transferred to Idaho State University to pursue a degree in Pharmacy, graduating in January of 1944.

Immediately thereafter, Waid joined the Navy with a direct commission to serve as an officer.  Waid attended boot camp in San Diego, California, and went on to Officers Training at the University of Arizona in Tucson.  He was commissioned to Tinian Island where he served as Cargo Officer and then Port Director.  At the end of the war, Waid had the opportunity to fly on a B-29 bomber over Tokyo Bay at the signing of the Peace Treaty with Japan.   Waid was extremely proud of his military service and was an avid supporter of many veteran organizations throughout his life.

Upon returning home, Waid married Dorothy Jean Hyldahl on November 17, 1946.  They started their own business, Young’s Rexall Drug, which operated successfully for over 45 years.  Waid and Dorothy raised their family of 9 children in Shelley.  Waid was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving in various callings.  Their marriage was later solemnized in the Idaho Falls Temple on August 3, 1989.

Waid particularly enjoyed his participation in civic activities.  He served as the Charter President of the Kiwanis Club in Shelley, as well as serving on the Board of Directors and later as President of the Shelley Chamber of Commerce.   Waid was also an active member of the Elks Club in Idaho Falls.  One of the highlights of his civic accomplishments was his involvement in the founding of the Shelley Education Foundation.  Waid was also honored as being selected as Grand Marshall for Shelley’s Spud Day Parade on two separate occasions.  Some of Waid’s greatest joys in life were golf and travel.  He and Dorothy took numerous cruises to many wonderful ports.

Waid’s many years of service at the pharmacy were noted by serving the community with off-hours assistance for medical needs and items as simple as batteries for toys on Christmas day.  Waid never turned anyone away who was in need of medicine regardless of their ability to pay.  He often commented that “Shelley has been good to me,” and he in turn tried earnestly to reciprocate.

Survivors include six sons, Curtis (Paula) Young of Boise, Idaho, Randy (Marianne) Young of Shelley, Idaho, Tracey Young of Long Beach, California, Tony (JuDean) Young of Cheyenne, Wyoming, Jeffery (Crystal) Young of Omaha, Nebraska, and Brian Young of Shelley, Idaho; two daughters, Kristine (David) Johnson, of Fairfax Virginia, and Barbara (Al) Brixey of Chandler, Arizona.  He is also survived by 32 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.

Waid was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy, one son, Roger Young, and four siblings, Darrell Young of Salt Lake City, Utah, Verlene Ray of Pocatello, Idaho, Winifred Brim, of Salt Lake City, Utah, and Margene Christensen of Shelley, Idaho.
