Hyrum Dale Mathews, 92, passed away Monday November 2, 2015 at his home in Shelley.
He was born on February 17, 1923, in Shelley, the sixth of eight children born to Heber Grant Mathews and Ruth Luella McBride.
He spent his childhood in Shelley and graduated from Shelley high school in 1943 where lettered in all three major sports.
After the attack on Pearl Harbor, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps and served in the Marshall Islands, the Marianas, and on Iwo Jima during WWII.
He was awarded the Silver Star, the Gold Star and the Purple Heart for his bravery.
On June 5, 1946, he married Bernice Arave in Taylor.
Their marriage was solemnized a year later in the Idaho Falls LDS temple.
They farmed in the Taylor area for a few years before moving to Shelley, where together they raised eight children.
Bernice passed away in November of 1999.
After moving to Shelley, he became a plumber and worked for his brother and other plumbing businesses before starting his own business with one of his sons in 1977.
As a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he served in various callings which included councilor in the young men, cub scouts and boy scouts, Sunday School superintendent, and councilor in the Elder’s quorum.
His most enjoyable calling was as an official greeter for Sacrament meeting which he did until the time of his death.
He was preceded in death by his dear wife Bernice; his parents Grant and Luella Mathews; Bernice’s parents Dave and Zelda Arave; a son David; two granddaughters Shanna Marie Mathews and Katie Jo Dalrymple; his four brothers Ivan of Shelley, Lewis and Boyd of Idaho Falls, Warren (Bud) of Pocatello; two sisters Louise Stone of Idaho Falls and Marjorie Farrer of Rexburg.
He is survived by a sister Alice Harder of Shelley; four sons Stephen Dale, Gordon Douglas (Judy), and Darren all of Shelley, Darryl Wade (Sheila) of Idaho Falls; three daughters Denise Thomas (Robert) of Taylorsville, Utah, DeAnna Dalrymple (Richard) and Darlene Hansen (John) both of Firth.
He has 21 grandchildren and, as of this date, 47 great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 A.M. Friday, November 6, 2015 at the Shelley South Stake Center (675 South Milton Ave). The family will meet with friends Thursday evening from 6:00 till 8:00 P.M. at Nalder Funeral Home (110 West Oak) in Shelley and Friday morning from 9:30 till 10:40 A.M. at the church Burial will be in the Taylor Cemetery with Military rites by the David B. Bleak Post #93 of Shelley assisted by the Idaho Honor Guard.
