Leland Samuel Winward, Jr.

Leland Samuel Winward, Jr. passed away May, 17, 2015, in Shelley, Idaho.

He was born September 15, 1927 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Leland Samuel and Helen Hale Winward. He was educated in Salt Lake City public schools, attended Brigham Young University and the University of Utah. He was drafted into the U.S. Army near the end of World War II, serving as a Medical Technician in New Mexico and at West Point Station Hospital in New York being honorably discharged after 18 months of service. He accepted a call to the Western States Mission, headquartered in Denver, CO for two years serving in Nebraska, Iowa, Colorado and New Mexico.

He married Coleen Midgely Cox in the Salt Lake Temple on November 22, 1963. He worked for the U.S. Postal Service and in 1971, they moved to Corona, CA. He was a Senior Lab Technician for Sunkist Lemon Products until they closed the plant and then, settled in Shelley, Idaho to spend the remainder of his working life in maintenance for the Shelley School District.

He served three stake missions and was ward mission leader. He and Coleen served together as missionaries in the Texas McAllen and Iowa Des Moines missions. They served in the name extraction program; also, at the Family History Centers in Shelley and Idaho Falls, Idaho. He was in various priesthood leadership callings: Sunday School President, Gospel Doctrine teacher and High Priest Group Leader.

Survivors include his wife, Coleen, two daughters, Leeanne (Darrell) Dieringer, Bremerton, WA and Gayle (Chris) Lewis, Ammon, Idaho, seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, one brother, Keith (Janet) Winward of Bountiful, Utah, one sister, Barbara (Robert L.) Seager, Cedar City, UT, sisters-in-law, Billie Jean Winward, Brigham City, UT and Joyce Winward, Pocatello, ID. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers: Robert H. Winward and Harvey Frank Winward.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 A.M. Saturday, May 23, 2015 at the Shelley First Ward Chapel (184 North Park Ave) with Bishop Randy Lundquist, conducting. The family will meet with friends Saturday morning from 9:30 till 10:40 A.M. at the church. Military Rites will be performed by David B. Bleak Post #93 assisted by the Idaho Honor Guard. Interment will be in the Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park (3401 S Highland Dr.) in Salt Lake City, Utah on Tuesday, May 26th at 12:00 pm. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Nalder Funeral Home in Shelley.
