Michael Clayton Young

Michael Clayton Young, 74, of Basalt, returned to his Heavenly Father on April 7, 2012 at 10:35 a.m. at the Salt Lake City Regional Hospital, due to complications after heart surgery.

He was born in June 9, 1937 to Betty C. and Jordon J. Young in Salt Lake City, Utah at the LDS Hospital.

In his younger life he was called “Manny,” a Swedish nickname for Michael. In his youth he was kept busy helping his father in the garden, his grandmother with the chickens and playing on the foothills of the eastern Salt Lake City mountains.

He graduated from Olympus High School in 1955, where he played on the football team.

He joined the National Guard while still in high school, serving four years.

He married Evelyn Prescott. After their divorce he went into active service in the army for two years.

He married Velma Jones on July 5, 1974 in the Provo LDS Temple. The morning after their wedding they moved to Basalt where he continued to work for Utah Power & Light.

He later worked for the Red Cross and The Shelley Pioneer newspaper.

In 1978 they adopted their daughter, Caroline. In 1995 they were blessed with a granddaughter, Makenzie.

He is survived by his wife, Velma of Basalt; his daughter, Caroline (Allan) Reid and granddaughter, Makenzie, both of Blackfoot; sisters, Elissa Young Evans of Midvale, Utah; and Lark Young of South Jordan, Utah; a brother, John R. (Saundra) Young of Sandy, Utah; and an uncle, Robert Clayton of Salt Lake City.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, David and Floyd Young.

Funeral services will be held April 14, 2012 at 11 a.m. at the Basalt LDS Church (823 N 675 E).  The family will receive friends Friday evening from 7 to 8:30 p.m. and Saturday morning from 9:30 till 10:40 both at the church.  Burial will be in the Basalt Cemetery with military rites by David B. Bleak Post 93 assisted by the Idaho Honor Guard.
