Nola M Johnson

February 28, 1932 — March 17, 2009

Nola Moser Johnson, 77, passed away at home on March 17, 2009, of conditions incident to cancer.

She was born February 28, 1932, in Idaho Falls, the second child of Francis Lyman Moser, a farmer, and Esther Miskin Moser, who died in childbirth in 1940.

Nola was raised by her father and attended Fairview Grade School and Grant Elementary. She graduated from Midway High in 1949, and then worked at the Idaho Falls Hospital during the polio epidemic, as a nurse’s aide and in the laundry, until the birth of her first baby.

She married Robert LeRoy Johnson of Idaho Falls on February 26, 1954, in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple. They moved to Shelley in 1957, where they raised ten children and managed a home drapery business for thirty years.

Nola was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving in many Primary and Relief Society callings and singing with ward choirs. She and Robert served a part-time mission as directors of the Idaho Falls Deseret Industries Humanitarian Room from 2000 to 2002, after which they served as volunteers in the temple cafeteria until 2007.

Nola developed many talents, including hand-stitching, crocheting, and pieced quilting. She enjoyed flower gardening and indoor plants, home cooking, reading, and singing. Her optimistic outlook on life has carried her through setbacks and illnesses, most recently, cancer, diagnosed in 2000, and a detached retina in 2001 that took the sight of her left eye.

She is survived by her husband, Robert, and ten children: Esther (Henry) Henscheid of Blackfoot; Michelle (Gary) Dobie, of Selma, Oregon; Sherie (Keven) Cole, of Shelley; Ramona (Joe) Hillman, of Orem, Utah; Christine (Randy) Lundquist, Alon (Shacone) Johnson, Robert (Jeanette) Johnson, of Shelley; Hal (Esther) Johnson of Frankfort, Kentucky; Bryon (Emily) Johnson, of Basalt; Millie (Jason) Brown, of Ammon; 36 living grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; a sister, Ruth (Dee) Rasmussen of Sublette, Idaho; a brother, Ross (Darlene) Moser, of Grant; and a brother-in-law, Orval (Eva) Wallace, of Idaho Falls.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a stepmother, Maren Mortensen Moser; two sisters, unnamed baby and Eva and two brothers, Clyde and Calvin; and a grand-daughter, Stacey Johnson.

Services will be held Saturday, March 21, at 11:00 a.m., at the Shelley First Ward Church, 184 N. Park, with Bishop Mark Nelson conducting. The family will meet friends Friday, March 20, from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m., at Nalder Funeral Home, 110 W. Oak in Shelley, and before the funeral, at the church, from 9:30 to 10:40 a.m. Burial will be in Shelley Hillcrest Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to Humanitarian Services (50 East North Temple Street, Floor 7, Salt Lake City, UT 84150-6890, “Memorial Gift in the name of Nola M. Johnson,” or online at www.ldsphilanthropies.org).
