Richard J. Greenhalgh

June 18, 1930 — July 10, 2013

Richard J Greenhalgh, 83, of Idaho Falls, passed away Wednesday, July 10, 2013, at Lincoln Court of Idaho Falls.

Richard was born in Nephi, Utah to Joseph “Bill” and Dorothy Puzey Greenhalgh on June 18, 1930. When he was six, the family moved to Lewisville, Idaho where he learned to work hard on the family farm. He had good memories of playing with his cousins and younger brother, Don. When Richard was in high school, the family moved to Shelley where Richard graduated from Shelley High School.

On July 22, 1948, Richard married his high school sweetheart, Flora Roberts. The marriage was later solemnized in the Idaho Falls temple on February 16, 1955. Richard spent the first few years of the marriage working for Snake River Equipment and later Challenge Creamery. In 1955, Richard moved back to Shelley where he lived for the next fifty years. He made his living farming. During those years he and Flora raised seven daughters.  After more than 20 years of farming, Richard went to work for the Postal Service where he was a rural carrier in the Firth area until he retired.

In 2003, Flora passed away and Richard spent the next few years traveling. During a trip to Branson in 2005, he suffered a serious illness which resulted in him moving to the Lincoln Court Assisted Living facility upon returning to Idaho.  There he met and fell in love with another resident, Jean Reed Stoker. They married on May 16, 2008. The following years were spent enjoying each other’s company and spending time with friends and family. Jean passed away on December 24, 2012, which was a devastating loss for Richard.

He was active in the L.D.S church and served in many different callings including bishop of the Sand Creek Ward and temple officiator. He had many good friends and one of the highlights of his day was the daily breakfasts “Bored Meetings” with his friends.

Survivors include his children, Toni (Frank) Olson of Grass Valley, CA, Linda (Clarence) Whitman of Shelley, Susan (Jim) Stumph of Nampa, Cathy Stumph of Aberdeen, Nancy (Nick) Tallyn of Dayton, OH, Karen (Jeff) Kempkes of Colorado Springs, CO, and Tamara (Glade) Hardy of Richmond, UT; sister-in-law, Jean Greenhalgh of Bountiful, UT; 25 grandchildren and 33 great grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his wives, Flora and Jean; his parents; his brother, Don; and a great-granddaughter, Parker.

Memorial services will be at 11:00 a.m. Monday, July 15, 2013, at the Jameston L.D.S. church at 1101 E. 1250 N., Shelley. There will be a viewing from 6-7:30 on Sunday, July 14, 2013, at Nalder Funeral Home, 110 W Oak Street, Shelley and for one hour prior to the services at the church. Burial will be in the Taylor Cemetery.

The family would like to express gratitude to those at the Lincoln Court Assisted Living Center, OneSource Hospice, and the many friends who touched his life.
