Rick Day

October 28, 1949 — April 9, 2025

Rick Day, beloved son, brother, and friend, passed away after a long battle with health issues, leaving behind many who will always carry his memory close.

Born in Shelley, Idaho, Rick was the first son of Jack and Jean Day. From a young age, Rick showed a strong work ethic. At age 14, he joined his father Jack and grandfather Howard on job sites, where he learned the craft of carpentry. It wasn’t long before he earned a reputation for excellent workmanship — his hands could build just about anything, and build it well.

Rick spent his youth in Shelley, graduating from Shelley High School. Over the years, he tried his hand at various professions, working as a bank auditor and briefly serving with the Shelley Police Department. He also worked in the polyurethane business with his Uncle Don Curnutt and cousin Craig, which gave him the opportunity to travel and connect with family in meaningful ways.

His talent for woodworking extended beyond construction — Rick had an eye for detail and artistry, often creating beautiful wooden vases inlaid with turquoise.

An avid outdoorsman, Rick felt most at peace in nature. Whether hunting in the hills or casting a line into quiet waters, he loved the solitude of the outdoors. A highlight of his life was the unforgettable fishing trips to Alaska with his best friend, Gavin Mathews — memories he always treasured.

Rick also had a lifelong bond with his dogs. No matter where he lived or what stage of life he was in, there was always a loyal dog by his side — each one trained, well-behaved, and a reflection of Rick’s care. His dogs were more than pets — they were his companions.

But above all, Rick will be remembered for his quick wit, teasing sense of humor, and the tall tales he loved to tell — stories that had you laughing and wondering if they were true. He was sharp, funny, handsome, and always dressed to impress. He had a charm that was entirely his own.

Though his later years were marked by health struggles, Rick’s spirit remained strong. He leaves behind a legacy of laughter, craftsmanship, and adventure. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
