Roberta Grace Setzer Petty was born in Dunn, North Carolina on October 28, 1949. She passed away peacefully on September 9, 2014 in Shelley, Idaho after a valiant, 5-year battle with brain cancer.
Roberta was raised in North Carolina until the age of 8 when her family moved to the Salt Lake Valley. She graduated from Granger High School in 1967 and went on to study Microbiology at BYU.
After graduating with her Bachelor's degree she took her first real job at the State Lab in Berkeley, California, which was a big step for a small town girl. She enjoyed her time in the Bay Area and left California when she received a call to serve a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Peru in 1973. She loved the Peruvian people and sharing the joy of the gospel with them. After her mission she returned to BYU and earned a Master's of Health Education, graduating as valedictorian of the College of Physical Education.
After her graduation she secured a faculty position at Oregon State University. She accepted the position and moved to Corvallis where she met Jerry Petty, who was working on a PhD in Forest Entomology. They married on December 30, 1980, in the Salt Lake LDS Temple and moved to Shelley Idaho, where Jerry began teaching Biology at Shelley High School.
Children soon arrived and Roberta enjoyed being a stay-at-home mother and homemaker. Along with her many responsibilities at home Roberta enjoyed serving faithfully in a variety of Church callings, including service in Primary, Young Women, Relief Society and being a devoted Visiting Teacher. She especially loved going to Girls Camp and serving with the youth.
Roberta loved reading, bird watching, crafting, travelling and spending time with her family. One of her greatest qualities was her kindness. She had many friends and also enjoyed working with the elderly.
Roberta was preceded in death by her father, Robert Francis Setzer.
Survivors include her husband, Jerry Petty, her children Jon (Elizabeth), Karla (Jeff) Ehlers, Shannon and Brian, as well as her mother, Grace Dewsnup and her sister Alma (Robert) Blakeslee. She has 3 grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, September 15, 2014 at the Shelley Tenth Ward Chapel (1555 N. 700 E.).
