Shirley Yvonne Freidenberger, 87 of Idaho Falls passed away September 14, 2024, under the care of Hands of Hope Hospice, surround by her loving family.
Shirley was born on October 26, 1936 at the LDS Hospital in Idaho Falls to Lee and Inez Mangum. She grew up on a farm in the Shelley/Firth area. Some of her happiest memories were having her dad clear the snow off the canal to ice skate all day long. In the summer time, she loved swimming on that same canal, even to the point that being in her Sunday dress could not keep her away.
Shirley attended Firth High School where she was the president of the Pep Club. She worked hard in school to be on the honor roll and loved being a baton twirler all through high school. She graduated in 1954. On June 3, 1955, she married Deloss Hoskins in the Idaho Falls Temple and had 3 wonderful boys, Terrell, Kim and Brad. As a family, they loved skiing. They could be found on the ski mountain all winter long or out on the lake in the summer. In July of 1969, Shirley competed in a water skiing competition and took 3rd place. She absolutely loved being on the water and could slalom ski well into her 70’s. Deloss and Shirley later divorced and Shirley married George Freidenberger in 1974. They were married for over 35 years when he passed in 2015.
Shirley loved to travel, especially with her boys and their families. She spent time in New York City, Disney cruises, Disney land, Pullman Washington, Phoenix and Lake Powell. Most recently, she took her sons and their wives to Alaska. She recalls that being one of the best weeks of her life.
Shirley worked and later retired from EG & G and that’s when her talents really bloomed. She owned and operated “Sugar Blossoms.” Here she made candy bouquets and spent hours in her in-home floral shop making gifts to hand deliver. If the candy bouquet business wasn’t enough, she then went on to add wedding cakes and wedding flowers to her list of talents. This was a life-long passion and she loved every second of making the brides big day perfect. The last wedding cake she made was for her granddaughter at the age of 72.
Shirley loved her granddaughters, and especially loved making them dresses. She would occasionally splurge on a dress at Lamont’s. At the age of 67, she even made her granddaughter’s wedding dress. She spent hours making it the perfect dress for the perfect occasion.
Shirley loved having a full house and loved baking for her family. She insisted on making every dish on Christmas Eve for the entire family and would spend hours baking all of the food. One of the traditions she loved was making gingerbread houses, caramel apples and decorating sugar cookies with family. Sporting events were a joy for Shirley and she loved the Boise State football team, especially Kellen Moore. She would sit for hours watching football games and loved the Green Bay Packers. Watching Aaron Rogers play on Monday Night Football was the last thing she watched.
Shirley was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and in March of 2024 she was sealed to her parents. This marked a very special moment in her life as her father passed away from melanoma cancer when she was only 7 years old.
Shirley is preceded in death by her grandsons Brandon Hoskins and Camden Hoskins; granddaughter, Lorna Hoskins; parents Lee and Inez Mangum; her sister Connie Longmore; Brother David Ray Fitch and Dale Mangum.
Shirley is survived by her children, Terrell (Barbara) Hoskins, Kim (Kelly) Hoskins, both of Shelley and Brad (Tammy) Hoskins of Garland, Utah. Along with 11 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.
