Terry Vernon Monson

July 15, 1942 — September 19, 2022

Terry Vernon Monson passed away on September 19, 2022.

Terry was born on July 15, 1942 in Ogden, Utah to Vernon Iverson Monson and Wanda Lucy Clark Monson. He was born premature and was so small they brought him home from the hospital in a shoe box .

They made their home in Ogden where his father managed a drive-in during WWII and that is where he got his love for a good hamburger and french fries. Terry was on the city swim team from a young age. At the age of 10 he won the Utah state championship for his age group in the Medley. He kept on swimming and missed the Olympic trials by .01 second.

At age 14 his father bought a farm in Leslie, Idaho. This is where his love of farming began. He graduated from Butte high school in 1964.

On the farm there wasn't much money so Terry used his spare time to read many different equipment manuals and became a self-taught mechanic. He was very valuable around the farm and community. He was sought after for his extensive skills and talents, and became a certified mechanic. He even taught a mechanics class at Mackay High School.

He married Karen Byington and they had 3 daughters, Barbara, Debbie and Lisa. They were later divorced. He then married Karen Rothwell and later divorced. He married Joyce Hill Mattson on September 13, 1995, and they made their home in Leslie where they farmed for 25 years. Joyce was the love of his life and cared for him till the end. After open heart surgery he decided he couldn't farm any longer and together they made their home in Firth.

Terry was adventurous! He loved to climb hills on his snow machine, and he always left the highest mark on the hill, it was his passion. He loved to go boating, water skiing, hunting, fishing, farming, riding motorcycles, and be outdoors. Terry didn't let the grass grow under his feet, he was always going somewhere or doing something. There was always fun to be had.

Terry was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ Of Latter Day Saints, and served many years in scouting, and also as executive secretary for 4 different bishoprics.

Terry was preceded in death by his parents Vernon and Wanda, and his sister Tamara Toomer.

He is survived by his wife, Joyce of 27 years, his daughters, Barbara (David) Phillips, Debbie (Mike) Glass, Lisa (Aaron) Bateman, and step children, Clair (Maren) Mattson, Oscar (Carmen) Mattson, Ben (Nakia) Mattson, Justin (Tabatha) Mattson, Sarah (Sam) Haroldsen, Lisa (Kim) Christiansen, 34 grandkids, and 2 great grandkids.
