Vance Bently Bolander

April 20, 1926 — November 3, 2020

Vance Bentley Bolander was born April 20, 1926 in Shelley, Idaho to James Emanuel George Bolander and Nora McGary Bolander. He passed away peacefully November 3, 2020 at home in Firth, surrounded by his family. He was 94 years old.

Vance was the sixth of eight children and grew up in Blackfoot, Shelley, and Firth areas, farming with his family. He attended high school in Firth, graduating from Firth High School. Upon graduation, Vance joined the navy, serving in WWII in the pacific on a transport ship. He received an honorable discharge in 1946.

On June 18, 1947, Vance married Darlene Beth Humpherys in the Idaho Falls Temple. They were blessed with seven children: Cathy Jensen of Meridian, Peggy Murray of Firth, Mark (Lanette) Bolander of Shelley, Kim (Susy) Bolander of Firth, Beverly (Michael) Marcum of Kaysville, Utah, Joy (David) McKinnon of Firth, and Cassandra (Wallace) Maxwell of Twin Falls.

Vance farmed in Firth, and later moved the family to Logan, Utah to attend Utah State University. In 1959, Vance graduated with a degree in electrical engineering, and the family moved back to their home in Firth. Vance worked at the site, French’s in Shelley, and Idaho Supreme in Firth. He retired from Pillsbury in Shelley.

A faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Vance served in many callings, including scout master, counselor in the Bishopric, Bishop, and councilor in the Stake Presidency. He and his wife, Darlene, served eight years in the name extraction program. They also served a mission to the New York-New York South Mission, where they enjoyed their work on Long Island and in Bermuda.

Vance’s greatest love was his family. They enjoyed camping, hiking, fishing, playing games, and the produce from a large garden. Vance enjoyed singing, playing the harmonica and ukulele, and making doll house furniture. He loved to attend events to watch his children and grandchildren, be it concerts, plays, or sports. He was very proud of his family and their accomplishments. Vance and Darlene spent several years traveling, 4-wheeling, and playing Dominoes with dear friends.

Vance was preceded in death by his beloved wife, parents, brothers and sisters (Nola, Ora, Lloyd, Patrina, Gary, Von, and Beth), granddaughter Kristy Bolander, and great-grandson Spencer Muir.

He is survived by his seven children, 36 grandchildren, 75 great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at a viewing Friday, November 6, 5:30-7:30 at Nalder Funeral Home in Shelley. Funeral services for family and close friends will be Saturday, November 7, at 2:00 at the Kimball/Firth Ward church in Firth. Burial will be in the Firth Cemetery.
