Zola Glenn Smith

June 16, 1928 — April 27, 2013

Our dear mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, Zola Glenn Smith, 84, passed away on April 27, 2013 from complications due to Alzheimer’s Disease.

Zola was born on June 16, 1928 in Cardston, Alberta, Canada to Alexander Stewart and Mabel May Low Glenn.  She was the fourth of five children.  Zola worked hard throughout her life which formed her attitude about service and improving the lives of others.

Zola attended elementary and graduated from Cardston High School on December 31. 1946.  She was active in sports and excelled in women’s basketball.  In the spring of 1947, Zola applied and was accepted into nursing school at Idaho Falls LDS hospital.  She was able to finish the course and became a registered nurse. She loved this profession and was a kind, compassionate nurse to many patients.

Zola met the love of her life, Dean Smith, at a dance held at the old LDS hospital reception area. They courted and were married on November 21, 1951 in the Idaho Falls Temple.  They raised seven children and were life partners for 61 years.

Zola loved life and especially people.  She made many new friends by her kind words and tender love and service.  She loved to sew and create beautiful quilts, oil paint, and attend various sporting events.  She was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and worked in Primary and Relief Society, both as a leader and teacher.  Zola and Dean were able to serve a mission at the Idaho Falls Temple Visitor’s Center.  Zola’s family was her greatest achievement in life.

Zola was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters:  Phyllis Glenn and Lorraine Parker, one brother:  Grant Glenn, two brother-in-laws:  Fred Clark and Smith Parker.

She is survived by her loving husband, Dean Smith of Orem, Utah; children, Marlene (Kelly) Cook of Mapleton, Utah; Patricia (Wayne) Lovell of Redlands, California; Connie (Mark) Stanley of St. George, Utah; Nancy (Joel) Hintze of St. George, Utah; John (Donna) Parker of Boise, Idaho; Lisa (Rob) Hunter of Highland, Utah; Randy (Heidi) Smith of Layton, Utah; sister, Priscilla Clark of Claresholm, Canada; 28 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren.

A special thanks to One Care Hospice especially Teresa Cain, Pauline Hill, Sara Kump and Andrea Morgenegg. Also to the staff at The Seville in Orem and Hearthstone Manor in Spanish Fork for all the compassionate care they showed to our mother.
